6-8-year-old children from Elementary school of Urdiain, a settlement in the North-East of Spain, published an article about their village in Txikipedia, Wikipedia for children in Basque, and thus, unwittingly, set a record for being the youngest Wikipedians.

The basque children's record

The news about the unexpected record was shared in Telegram-chat Wikimedia General by Galder Gonzalez (Theklan) of Basque Wikimedians User Group (баск. Euskal Wikilarien Kultura Elkartea) on Friday evening, the 24 of January 2020.

Children have spent a month working in a teacher-led group on preparing the text, choosing the spot for the photo and selecting other media to be included into the article of the children’s encyclopedia. Now that their work is visible to people all over the world, young Wikimedias from Urdiain (Sakana/Barranca district of Navarra province) are welcoming selfies with the article they have written from readers around the planet.

Txikipedia — is a Basque language version of WikiJunior. Unlike its other language versions, it is not based in Wikibooks, but in an eponymous dedicated namespace inside Basque Wikipedia. The project came about in 2018, after preliminary development outside of Wikimedia movement on the basis of Vikidia (vikidia.org) — a wiki-project for children with and by the children.[1]

Wikimedia Education Program's previous record for the youngest editors belonged (it still belongs for editing Wikipedia articles using sources, being conscious on protecting text and media copyrights and guided to interact onwiki controlling their behanior) to a class of 26 8-year-old Wikipedia article creators, supported by Manos Kefalas (ManosHacker) from Wikipedia Community Schools Association Greece.

Basque Wikimedians User Group

Basque Wikimedians formed in December 2015 and was recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation in the beginning of 2016. Group participants introduced local cultural and educational institutions to the benefits of sharing about regional cultural heritage via Wikimedia projects.

One of the first undertakings was a Wikimedian-in-Residence cooperation with the University of the Basque Country (Lore Agirrezabal). The following year a similar project was implemented with Central Children's Library of Donostia — San Sebastian (баск. Donostiako Haur Liburuaren Dokumentaziogunea; Leire Cano).

Beginning September 25, 2016 contributing in Basque Wikipedia was included into the University of the Basque Country curricula in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Anthropology, Law, Business, Phylosophy etc.

Joint work with universities on engaging students into thematic content creation in Basque for 12-16 year olds started in the summer of 2017 in the framework of a two-year-long regionally funded educational project in collaboration with the Basque Agency for Innovations in Primary and Secondary Education (баск. Berritzegune).

Important component was completing Basque interface translations for Wikimedia movement developed education-related tools, as well as key best practice manuals — this counted as credit for translation students.

In parallel, Basque Wikimedians used local (Архивная копия от 18 августа 2019 на Wayback Machine) equivalent of Russian Learning standards to identify a list of 1610 basic education topics. These amount to less than 0,5 % of Basque Wikipedia articles but receive over 7 % of daily pageviews[2].

In the Spring of 2019 Basque Wikimedians hosted first three-day-long «Wikimedia+Education» conference. Its very intense thematic program was covered by simultaneous interpretation from/to English. Russia’s Wikimedians were represented by Timerkhan Shaykhutdinov (Тимерхан) of Tatar Wikimedians from the Republic of Tatarstan, who shared on Selet WikiSchool experience, and later played an important role in organizing Summer Inter-Regional Wiki-Program of IT BILER FORUM 2019 held in Bilyarsk.

Children's Wiki-education in Russia

In Russia, only Wikimedians from Tatarstan have an established process for sharing own knowledge with 12-16-year-olds. This takes place in the framework of Selet WikiSchool component of Wiki-Smart Tatarstan project.

Throughout 2019, local community contributed to a number of working meetings and three public presentations dedicated to using Wikimedia offered opportunities in Tatar-based Education. Tatar Wikipedia participants also reached out to partners to run Tatar article contests, namely «Tatar 4.0» and «Jewels of Knowledge».
