On Sunday January, 12, 2020 Wikimedians of Saint Petersburg, who participate in local so-called wikimedia user groups, have gathered to hold a meeting deidcated to making their annual report and to celebration of Wikipedia Birthday. Earlier, on January, 11, a Wikimedian meeting took place in Moscow. Following the event, Petersburg users have collectively written their annual report by January, 22.

In 2020 Wikipedia turned 19 years old. The actual birthday date is considered to be January 15, when the first websites were created under the domain wikipedia.com. But wikipeians may celebrate the event both earlier, and later — because "birth of a website" may be a lengthy process. At the end of year 2000, the creators of historical Nupedia projects were considering the idea of applying "wiki" technology as an auxiliary tool. On January 10, 2001, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, through the mailing list, proposed to install a wiki engine at Nupedia's hosting, and on January, 15 one of the developers bought the domain name that combined the words "wiki-" and "-pedia".

All these events are described in the Wikipedia article "History of Wikipedia". Prior to 19-year celebration, Russian Wikipedians referred to Russian version of it, entitled «История Википедии», and found there were some mistaken and outdated information. Following that, one of Petersburg wikimedians (not a member of the mentioned user-groups though) has proposed this article and the article about Nupedia to be a "Work of the Week" for the week #4 of 2020 (20–26 January). "Work of the Week" is a Russian Wikipedia analogue of English Wikipedia's "Today's articles for improvement" — an inner project dedicated to joint improvement of selected topics.

Such means are used for coordination that helps in the improvement and development of Wikipedia as well as its "sister projects". Constant development of Wikipedia and sister projects is an important social and educational task of global scale. The other means include "edit-a-thons" — collective efforts for editing articles on specified topic on within specified terms. Arrangement of such events is one of the functions of Wikimedia user groups (UG's).

As it was reported earlier, two new user groups were created last summer in Saint Petersburg. This was the main year 2019 outcome for their participants. Preparatory work was made, including interaction with Wikimedia Foundation, that finally registered two UG's: "North-West Russia Wiki-Historians User Group (NWR-Hist)" and "Wikimedians of Saint Petersburg User Group (RU-SPB)". These two groups overlap, but are not identical. The inspirer and ideologist for the 1st one is thought to be user:Красный, for the 2nd — Paul Kaganer. Paul was not present at the meeting, sending remote greetings, so those who gathered concentrated primarily on the NWR-Hist affairs. Vladimir Medeyko, participant of both groups, anyway, was present — in the passed year, he was re-elected the head of Wikimedia RU, the Russian Wikimedia chapter.

The meeting on 12 January was not easy to organize. For the first time, it was planned on December 21, 2019, but user:Красный was unexpectedly accidentally injured and got into hospital. Remaining users held meeting without him and without serious results, wishing him good health. He went well, and the next meeting produced successful annual report by January, 22. Here are some of the remarkable results:

  • The main result is obviously the recognition and registration of both NWR-Hist and RU-SPB groups by the Wikimedia Foundation. All of the necessary preparations were accomplished that included communications and reporting in English language and various Wiki authoring.
  • Kingisepp edit-a-thon — the edit-a-thon following the ramble to Kingisepp (formerly Yamburg), the old Russian town next to Estonia border. The wikimedians began detailed Wiki examination of related topics, uploaded their own photos and historical images to Wikimedia Commons, created and improved a number of articles. Among the articles, there are 3 Russian language ones: Ям (крепость) (Yam Fortress), Коммерческое училище (Кингисепп) (Kingisepp Commercial College) and Кингисепп (станция) (Kingisepp Railway Station) that received "Well-done Article" quality status in Russian Wikipedia, and 2 of them are now candidates for "Good Article" status.
  • Many of other regular Wikipedia articles were improved. The main works are done in Russian language, but there are some works in English, Erzya, Hungarian, Turkish and Georgian languages. Overall number of images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons exceeds 1000.
  • During the meeting, users discussed the practices of Farhad Fatkullin, Wikimedian of the Year 2018, who is a member of both groups. He managed to provide some personal financial support for some Russian Wikimedians who visited international Wikimedia events. Generally, it is considered that Wikimedia Foundation don't allow financing of Russian institutions due to economical sanctions.
  • The preliminary plan for 2020 was created, mainly on new expedition destinations and themes for edit-a-thons. The participants denoted, that one part of the plans seems unlikely to accomplish this year: a ski-ride towards Kronstadt forts across the Gulf of Finland. There is no permanent snow in the region this winter, the temperature is generally above zero, so there's no ice at the Gulf.
